Operation Backpack
Volunteers of America is having its 8th annual Operation Backpack campaign from July 8 - July 26. Backpacks will be ready for distribution August 12th. Thousands of homeless children go back to school each year without any school supplies. Last year they gave out more than 6,000 backpacks and school supplies. As a partnering agency, we will receive backpacks and school supplies to pass on to the children of the families we serve. For more information on how to get involved click here.

This is the Job Development Center in Francis House Center during a rare quiet moment. We will soon have new computer equipment to better assist our clients with becoming gainfully employed.
It is with deep gratitude that we thank Sierra Health Foundation, a private philanthropy dedicated to promoting health equity and a healthful life for all people in our region through partnership and innovation! We have been approved for a $15,000 grant as part of their 2013 Responsive Grants Program funding. This grant will be used to upgrade the computer lab in our Job Development Center including new hardware, software and improved networking capabilities. In the first quarter of 2013, we saw 1,200 clients in the JDC, helping them prepare resumes and secure work. Our mission is to provide relief, resources and hope to transform individuals and families from a struggle for survival to a plan for their success. Having a job is critical to being able to secure housing and a sense of productivity and stability.

Francis House Center has been serving the homeless and impoverished for more than 42 years. We are a community-based organization providing some of the most basic services and resources to those living on the edge. We believe that every individual deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. That is why we are here to help...to give the disenfranchised and the destitute a little hope and a helping hand to get them started on their way to self-sufficiency and self-respect. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 9am – 12 noon, (we ask that you do not line up before 7:45am for the 9am service)
Thursday – 12 noon – 3pm, (we ask that you do not line up before 10:45am for the 12 noon service)
Please get in line to get a number for services. We guarantee service to the first 35 people. Those using only the Job Development Center do not need a number.
These are some of the direct services we provide:
- Bus passes
- California ID's
- Birth certificates
- Notary services
- Hygiene kits
- Eyeglasses
- Winter coats, scarves, hats, gloves (when available)
- In-depth resource counseling
We also have a Job Development Center (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 9am – 12 noon and Thursday, 12 noon - 3pm) to help our clients become gainfully employed, as well as, transportation support to help them get to their first paycheck. We also provide motel vouchers for homeless families.
